This free granny heart crochet pattern makes a lacy hanging heart in one color: a small wheel in the middle, rings of granny clusters around it, two scalloped lobes at the top and a pointed tip at the bottom. It is an original CookZya design, about 5½ in wide, made to hang on a tree, a door knob or a gift.
You only need ch, sl st, sc and dc. There is no turning and no decrease: every round is worked on the right side. The heart shape comes from where the corners go. The tip of the heart gets a corner in every round, the two lobes get a pair of corners, and the notch between the lobes gets none, so the lobes grow and the notch stays low.
The chart below is drawn from the same data as the written rounds, symbol by symbol, so what you see in the chart is what the rounds make. Every round was checked by our stitch simulator; this pattern has not been crochet-tested yet. Tick each round as you go: your progress stays saved in this browser.
- Finished size
- About 5½ in wide and 5 in tall, plus a 1½ in loop (approximate)
- Level
- Easy to intermediate: ch, sl st, sc and dc, working into spaces and into one stitch
- Time
- About 0 h 50 min, estimated (not timed)
- Yarn
- Worsted weight (#4): about 20 yd terracotta (A); the green loop (B) uses only 1-2 yd — any scrap will do (5 yd is plenty)
- Hook
- US G-6 (4.0 mm), one size under the usual worsted hook, for a firm ornament
- Gauge
- Suggested only, not swatched: 18 sc = 4 in. After Rnd 3 (the wheel plus the two granny rounds) the piece is about 4¾ in wide.
✓ CookZya original design · Stitch counts checked round by round — all 5 rounds (the wheel, two granny rounds, the scalloped edge and the loop) were replayed by our stitch simulator, the chart was drawn from the same model as the written rounds, and a second reading made from the written text alone matched it stitch by stitch. This pattern has not been crochet-tested: tension, gauge and final size are up to your hands.
Materials
- Color A — terracotta (rust), for the heart, about 20 yd
- Color B — forest green, for the hanging loop, about 5 yd
- Yardage is estimated from the stitch counts with a 20 % margin, and includes the tails and the loop. One small ball of each color is plenty.
- A smooth worsted cotton or cotton blend shows the stitches and the holes best and keeps the heart firm. Acrylic works too.
- US G-6 (4.0 mm) hook. A hook one size under the yarn label makes a denser fabric, so the heart holds its shape when it hangs.
- Yarn needle, scissors, rust-proof pins and a towel for blocking; spray starch (optional).
Notes
- US crochet terms. ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sp = space, st(s) = stitch(es), rep = repeat, Rnd = round.
- Sc: insert the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops. Dc: yarn over, insert, pull up a loop, then (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) twice.
- Magic ring: wrap the yarn around two fingers, insert the hook under the strands, pull up a loop and ch 1. Work Rnd 1 over the ring, then pull the tail to close the center.
- A cluster is 3 dc worked into the same space. A space (sp) is the ch-2 gap between two clusters. Work INTO the space (under the chain), not into the chain stitches.
- A corner is (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2) in one space: it adds one cluster and one space to the round.
- Rnds 2 and 3 end with a sl st join in the top of the beginning ch 3; the ch 3 at the start of a round counts as the first dc. Rnd 4 starts with ch 1, which does not count as a stitch.
- The heart is symmetric about a line from the tip to the notch. After Rnd 2 you can fold it in your mind on that line: the left and right sides are made of the same clusters.
Granny heart crochet chart

Heart (A, terracotta) and loop (B, green)
8 dc in the ring, then 2 granny rounds (11 then 14 clusters) and an edge of 28 sc and 9 shells. Work every round on the right side, counter-clockwise, without turning.
- With A (terracotta), make a magic ring. Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp), *dc in the ring, ch 1; rep from * 6 more times. Pull the tail to close the ring. Join with sl st in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 4 (8 dc, 8 ch-1 sps: the wheel; the ch-1 at the top of the beginning ch 4 is the first sp). 8 dc, 8 ch-1 sps
- Sl st in the next ch-1 sp. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, ch 2: this is the tip of the heart. (3 dc, ch 2) in each of the next 2 sps. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2) in the next sp. (3 dc, ch 2) in the next sp. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2) in the next sp. (3 dc, ch 2) in each of the next 2 sps. Join with sl st in the top of the beginning ch 3 (33 dc in 11 clusters, 11 ch-2 sps). 33 dc, 11 ch-2 sps
- Sl st in each of the next 2 dc and in the next ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp, ch 2: this is the tip of the heart. (3 dc, ch 2) in each of the next 3 sps. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2) in the next sp. (3 dc, ch 2) in each of the next 2 sps. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2) in the next sp. (3 dc, ch 2) in each of the next 3 sps. Join with sl st in the top of the beginning ch 3 (42 dc in 14 clusters, 14 ch-2 sps). 42 dc, 14 ch-2 sps
- Sl st in the next dc (the center dc of the first cluster). Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in the same dc. (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch-2 sp: the tip of the point. [Sc in the center dc of the next cluster (skip its other dc), 3 sc in the next ch-2 sp] 2 times. [Sc in the center dc of the next cluster (skip its other dc), 5 dc in the next ch-2 sp] 9 times. (Shell number 5 of this run lands in the notch, between the lobes — mark it: it holds the loop later.) [Sc in the center dc of the next cluster (skip its other dc), 3 sc in the next ch-2 sp] 2 times. Join with sl st in the first sc (28 sc, 45 dc). Fasten off and weave in the end. 28 sc, 45 dc, 1 ch-2 sp
- With the right side facing you, join B (green) with sl st in the center dc (dc 3 of 5) of the shell in the notch, between the two lobes — insert your hook under BOTH top loops of that dc. Ch 14, sl st in the same dc to close the loop. Fasten off, tie the two green tails in a snug knot behind the shell and weave them in along the stitches for about 2 in. 1 ch-14 loop
Block and hang the heart
1 Weave in the ends
2 Block the heart
3 Hang it
Finishing
Fluff the shells with your fingers, then hang the heart by its loop.
Design notes
- Why the corners are mirrored: each round is worked into the spaces of the round before, so a corner on the left needs the same corner on the right. Rnd 2 and Rnd 3 are written so that host 1 matches the last host, host 2 the one before it, and so on. Our build checks this for every round.
- Counts by round: the wheel has 8 dc and 8 spaces; Rnd 2 has 11 clusters (8 hosts + 3 corners); Rnd 3 has 14 clusters (11 hosts + 3 corners). The edge puts one sc in each of the 14 clusters and one unit in each of the 14 spaces.
- The shape is an estimate. There are no decreases: the point comes from plain sc along the lower sides and a tight (sc, ch 2, sc) at the tip, and the lobes from the corners and the 5-dc shells. Blocking does the rest.
- Where the 5½ in comes from: the 14 clusters of Rnd 3 add up to about 14.9 in around, a heart is about 3.19 times its width around, and the edge adds one dc height (0.42 in) on each side. These are estimates from a suggested gauge.
Tips for this granny heart crochet pattern
- Use a stitch marker in the tip space of every round: the corner at the tip is where you start and end each round.
- Count the clusters at the end of Rnd 2 (11) and Rnd 3 (14) before you go on.
- Keep the ch 2 between clusters loose enough to see a hole, but not so loose that the cluster slips.
- Work the edge into the center dc of each cluster, then into the space after it: that is what makes the scallops sit over the holes.
- For a stiffer heart, use cotton and starch it while it dries pinned out.
Common mistakes
- Working into the chain stitches of a space instead of under the whole space: the holes close up.
- Forgetting the corner at the tip: the point rounds off and the left and right sides no longer match.
- Putting the corner pairs of Rnd 2 or Rnd 3 on one side only: the heart leans.
- Working the edge shell in the wrong space: the loop must come out of the shell in the notch, between the lobes.
Make it your own
- Ribbon instead of a loop: skip the green loop and thread an 8 in ribbon through the notch shell.
- Garland: make several hearts and join them with a ch-14 loop each.
- Coaster size: stop after Rnd 3 and work the edge in sc only (do not make the shells).
- Valentine colors: red heart with a cream loop.
- Bigger heart in bulky yarn with a US I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, same stitch counts.
Care
- Spot clean only, with a damp cloth.
- Store flat in a box between sheets of tissue paper.
- If the shells soften, spray them lightly with water or starch and block again.
FAQ
Is this granny heart crochet pattern good for beginners?
It is easy to intermediate. You need ch, sl st, sc and dc, and you work into spaces. If you have made a granny square, you can make this heart.
How big is the granny heart ornament?
About 5½ in wide and 5 in tall with worsted weight yarn and a US G-6 (4.0 mm) hook. This is an estimate from a suggested gauge, not a measured sample.
How much yarn do I need?
About 20 yd of terracotta and 5 yd of green worsted weight yarn, tails and loop included (estimated, with a 20 % margin).
How do you shape a heart without decreasing?
Every round has a corner at the tip and a pair of mirrored corners on the lobes, and none in the notch. The edge is plain sc along the lower sides and 5-dc shells on the lobes, so the heart narrows to a point.
Do the chart and the written rounds match?
Yes. The chart is drawn from the same data as the rounds, symbol by symbol, and our stitch simulator replayed every round.
Can I make a bigger granny heart?
Yes: use bulky yarn and a US I-9 (5.5 mm) hook with the same stitch counts.
How do I make the granny heart stiff?
Use cotton yarn and the smaller hook, then block the heart with spray starch and let it dry flat.
Can I sell the hearts I make from this pattern?
Yes, you may sell the hearts you crochet yourself. Please don't sell or repost the pattern; link to this page instead.
