Found an air fryer recipe but only have an oven? Convert the temperature and time in one click β€” and back again.

How this converter works

Air fryers are small convection ovens that blast hot air around your food, so they cook faster and at a lower temperature than a regular oven. To move a recipe from air fryer to a conventional oven, you raise the temperature by about 25Β°F and add roughly 20–25% more time. This calculator does the math for you, in both directions, and gives you a tip for your specific food.

How to Convert Air Fryer to Oven (Step by Step)

Air fryer recipes are everywhere, but not everyone owns an air fryer. The good news: almost any air fryer recipe works in a regular oven with two small adjustments. Because an air fryer is a compact convection oven that moves hot air quickly around the food, it cooks faster and at a lower temperature than a standard oven. To get the same golden, crispy result in your oven, you simply add a little heat and a little time.

The 3-step rule

  1. Raise the temperature by 25Β°F. If the air fryer recipe says 400Β°F, set your oven to 425Β°F. (In Celsius, add about 15Β°C.)
  2. Add 20–25% more time. A 20-minute air fryer recipe becomes about 24–25 minutes in the oven. The calculator above does this math for you instantly.
  3. Preheat and use a wire rack. Always preheat the oven fully. For fries, wings, and anything that should be crispy, set a wire rack over a baking sheet so hot air can reach all sides of the food.

Why the air fryer cooks differently

An air fryer concentrates fast-moving hot air in a small basket, which is why food crisps so quickly. A full-size oven has more empty space and slower air movement, so it needs a higher temperature and a bit more time to brown and crisp the same food. If your oven has a convection or fan setting, it behaves more like an air fryer, so you can use a smaller adjustment (around 15Β°F instead of 25Β°F).

A quick example

Say you found a recipe for air fryer chicken thighs at 380Β°F for 18 minutes. Convert it for the oven: 380 + 25 = 405Β°F (round to 400–410Β°F), and 18 minutes + 22% = about 22 minutes. Place the thighs on a wire rack, preheat to 400Β°F, and check that the internal temperature reaches 165Β°F.

🌑️ Safe Internal Cooking Temperatures

Whichever method you use, always cook proteins to a safe internal temperature (USDA guidelines).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about converting between air fryer and oven.

How do I convert an air fryer recipe to a conventional oven?+
Raise the temperature by about 25Β°F and increase the cooking time by roughly 20 to 25 percent. An air fryer circulates hot air faster, so a standard oven needs a little more heat and time to get the same result.
What temperature is 400Β°F air fryer in a regular oven?+
400Β°F in an air fryer is about 425Β°F in a conventional oven, plus roughly 20 to 25 percent more cooking time.
Do you add or subtract time when converting air fryer to oven?+
You add time. A conventional oven cooks more slowly than an air fryer, so increase the cooking time by about 20 to 25 percent and raise the temperature by 25Β°F. Always check doneness a few minutes before the calculated time.
Why do air fryer recipes use lower temperatures?+
An air fryer is a small convection oven that circulates hot air very quickly around the food. This rapid airflow cooks food faster and more evenly, so air fryer recipes use a lower temperature than a conventional oven to avoid burning the outside.
Is an air fryer the same as a convection oven?+
They work the same way, both use a fan to circulate hot air, but an air fryer is smaller and the airflow is more concentrated. If your oven has a convection or fan setting, your conversions will be closer, so you can use a smaller temperature adjustment.
Do I need to preheat the oven when converting from an air fryer?+
Yes. Air fryers heat up almost instantly, but a conventional oven needs about 10 to 15 minutes to preheat. Preheat fully before adding the food, and start timing only once the food goes in.
Can I convert any air fryer recipe to the oven?+
Most air fryer recipes convert well to a baking sheet in the oven. Foods that rely on crisp airflow, like fries or wings, crisp up best on a wire rack set over a baking tray so air reaches all sides.

✨ These conversions are a reliable starting point based on the standard 25°F / 20% rule. Ovens vary, so always check your food for doneness and use a meat thermometer for proteins. If your oven has a convection/fan setting, use a slightly smaller temperature adjustment.
