Easy Flat Crochet Heart Pattern

A free small flat heart in 2 rounds, about 2 in wide in worsted yarn

Crochet heart pattern: a small flat red crochet heart, thick stitches fanning out from a center ring, a single crochet edge and a sharp point, on cream linen with dried rose petals
Illustration, not a heart crocheted from this pattern. Your exact stitch count is on the chart below: 14 stitches in Rnd 1, 24 sc in Rnd 2.

This free crochet heart pattern makes a small flat heart with two round lobes and a sharp point, in just 2 rounds. In worsted yarn it comes out about 2 in wide. One heart takes about 12 minutes, ends included (estimated from the stitch count).

Tuck one in a Valentine's card, sew one on a hat or a bag, or string about 9 on a chain for a 3 ft garland. You get the written rounds, a stitch chart, a chain start if the magic ring gives you trouble, and sizes for 5 yarn weights.

Stitch counts are checked round by round. The heart has not been crocheted and swatched by a person, so size, yarn and time are estimates.

✓ CookZya original design · Stitch counts checked round by round — both rounds were replayed by our stitch simulator, the chart was drawn from the same model as the written rounds, and a second reading made from the written text alone matched it stitch by stitch. This heart has not been crocheted and swatched by a person: tension, gauge and final size are up to your hands.

Materials

  • Color A — red (or any color), for the heart, about 5 yd
  • Yardage is estimated from the stitch counts with a 20 % margin, with a 6 in tail at each end. Any scrap of yarn will do for one heart.
  • Worsted cotton or acrylic both work. Cotton gives a flatter, crisper heart; acrylic a softer one.
  • US H-8 (5.0 mm) hook for worsted yarn, or the hook in the size table for another yarn.
  • Yarn needle and scissors.

Notes

  • US crochet terms. ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet, sp = space, st(s) = stitch(es). UK terms: sc = UK dc, dc = UK tr, tr = UK dtr.
  • Magic ring: wrap the yarn twice around two fingers, insert the hook under the strands, pull up a loop and ch 1 to lock it (this ch 1 does not count). Work Rnd 1 over the ring, then pull the tail.
  • No magic ring? Chain start: ch 4 and join with a sl st in the first ch to make a ring, then work Rnd 1 into this ring exactly the same way. The stitch counts do not change; the center hole stays a little open because the ring cannot be pulled tight.
  • All the stitches of Rnd 1 go INTO the ring, not into each other. Push them together as you go so they all fit.
  • Ch 3 at the start of Rnd 1 counts as the first dc. The ch 1 at the start of Rnd 2 does not count.
  • The side facing you as you work Rnd 1 is the right side. You never turn.
  • Rnd 2 works into the stitches of Rnd 1; a ch-1 sp is the gap made by a ch 1, and you work under the chain, not into it.
  • Stitch how-tos. Sl st: insert the hook, yarn over, pull through the stitch and the loop on the hook. Sc: insert, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops. Dc: yarn over, insert, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) twice. Tr: yarn over twice, insert, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 3 times.

Crochet Heart Chart for Both Rounds

Crochet chart of Rnd 1 of the heart: a magic ring with the beginning ch 3, 3 tr, 3 dc, a ch 1, the point tr, a ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr and a closing ch 3, all worked into the ring
Rnd 1 only, in standard crochet symbols: every stitch grows from the ring. The two groups of 3 tr make the lobes, the long tr at the bottom makes the point. Key: oval = ch, X = sc, T with 1 bar = dc, T with 2 bars = tr. Open the chart full size
Crochet chart of the whole heart: Rnd 1 in black and Rnd 2 in red, 24 sc around the edge with 2 sc in each tr of the lobes and (sc, ch 2, sc) at the point

Written Crochet Heart Pattern, Round by Round

Rnd 1 builds the heart into a ring; Rnd 2 is a border of 24 sc with a sharp point. Work both rounds on the right side, without turning.

  1. Make a magic ring (or the chain start in the notes). Ch 3 (counts as the first dc). Working into the ring: 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr (the point of the heart), ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st in the ring. Pull the tail to close the ring tight. 7 dc, 7 tr, 2 ch-1 sps, 1 ch-3 sp
  2. Do not turn. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch; it stretches up along the ch-3, that is normal). Lobe and side (11 sc): sc in the top of the beginning ch-3, 2 sc in each of the next 3 tr, sc in each of the next 3 dc, sc in the next ch-1 sp. Point (2 sc, 1 ch-2 sp): (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next tr. Side and lobe (11 sc): sc in the next ch-1 sp, sc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 sc in each of the next 3 tr, sc in the ch-3 sp (the closing ch 3 of Rnd 1). Join: skip the sl st of Rnd 1, sl st in the first sc. Fasten off. 24 sc, 1 ch-2 sp

How to Make a Heart Garland or Sew It On as an Appliqué

Small flat red crochet heart appliqué sewn on the front of a cream knit beanie
Illustration of the appliqué idea on a knit beanie, not a heart sewn from this pattern. A worsted heart is about 2 in wide (calculated).

1 Weave in or keep the tails

For a garland, weave in both tails on the back. For an appliqué, weave in the ring tail but leave a 12 in tail at the end: you sew with it.

2 Make a heart garland

Make your hearts first. With a new strand, ch 30 for the first tie. Then for each heart: hold it right side facing you, insert the hook into the sl st that joined Rnd 2 (the top of the notch), work 1 sl st, then ch 12 to the next heart. After the last heart, ch 30 for the second tie and fasten off. How many hearts (calculated, worsted): 3 ft: 9 hearts, about 52 yd in all · 5 ft: 18 hearts, about 102 yd in all · 6 ft: 22 hearts, about 124 yd in all (hearts and chain).

3 Sew a heart on as an appliqué

Pin the heart on the fabric. Thread the 12 in tail on a yarn needle and whipstitch through the back of each sc of Rnd 2 and into the fabric, all around. Knot the tail inside the item and weave it in. Choose a yarn that can be washed the same way as the item you sew it on.

Finishing

Weave in the ends on the back, then press the heart flat with your fingers (or pin it and mist it with water, then let it dry flat) so the point stays sharp.

Design notes

  • The shape comes from one round: the stitches of Rnd 1 all start at the ring, so their heights draw the heart (tr lobes, dc sides, one tr point, low ch-3 columns at the notch).
  • Counts: Rnd 1 has 7 dc, 7 tr, 2 ch-1 sps, 1 ch-3 sp; Rnd 2 has 24 sc, 1 ch-2 sp. Each side of the point gets the same number of sc, so the heart is symmetric.
  • Sizes come from the outline of the chart in stitch widths, multiplied by the width of one sc at each suggested gauge. Yardage comes from the stitch counts. They are estimates, not measurements.
  • Time is the stitch count at 6 stitches a minute plus 3 minutes for the ends: an estimate, not a timed sample.

Tips for a Sharp Point and a Neat Ring

  • Keep the ring loose while you work Rnd 1 and pull it tight only at the end.
  • Count Rnd 1 before you pull the ring: 7 dc (with the beginning ch 3), 7 tr and 3 chain spaces.
  • Work the (sc, ch 2, sc) at the point snugly: that is what keeps the tip pointed.
  • Make one heart, then check its size against the table before you make a garland.

Common mistakes

  • Working Rnd 1 into the stitches instead of into the ring: the heart will not close.
  • Forgetting the ch 1 on each side of the point tr: the point turns blunt.
  • Putting a sc into the sl st that closed Rnd 1: skip that sl st, it sits at the bottom of the notch.

Make it your own

  • Two colors: work Rnd 1 in pink and Rnd 2 in red.
  • A bigger heart: use bulky yarn with the hook in the size table, same stitch counts.
  • A tiny heart for cards: fingering yarn with a US C-2 hook.

FAQ

Is this crochet heart pattern easy for beginners?

It is rated Easy: 2 rounds of basic stitches (ch, sl st, sc, dc and tr) with simple shaping. The treble crochet is the only stitch with 2 yarn overs, and the Notes explain it.

How big is this crochet heart, and can I make it bigger or smaller?

About 2 in wide and 2¼ in tall in worsted yarn with a US H-8 (5.0 mm) hook. Keep the same stitch counts and change the yarn: about 1¼ in wide in fingering, about 2¾ in in bulky. The size table gives all 5 yarn weights. These sizes are calculated, not measured.

Can I crochet a heart without a magic ring?

Yes. Ch 4 and join with a sl st in the first ch to make a ring, then work Rnd 1 into it the same way. The stitch counts do not change.

Why is there a hole in the middle of my heart?

With a magic ring, pull the tail tight at the end of Rnd 1 to close it. With the ch 4 start, the center stays a little open because the ring cannot be pulled tight. The dip at the top is the notch between the lobes: skip the sl st of Rnd 1 when you work Rnd 2 so it stays clean.

How many hearts do I need for a garland?

About 9 worsted hearts for 3 ft, 18 worsted hearts for 5 ft, 22 worsted hearts for 6 ft, with a ch 30 tie at each end and ch 12 between hearts (calculated). One heart takes about 5 yd of worsted yarn.

Can I sell the hearts I make?
