Crochet Snowflake Coaster Pattern (Free, Tapestry Hexagon)

A hexagon coaster with a cream 6-arm snowflake on cranberry red, worked in the round

Crochet snowflake coaster: a hexagon tapestry crochet coaster, cranberry red with a cream six-arm snowflake and a cream edge, on dark slate
AI-generated illustration made from our chart, not a photo of a coaster made from this pattern. Differences: the snowflake's side branches are drawn more freely than in our chart and the number of stitches is not the pattern's. The exact stitches are in the drawings below.

Free pattern · Easy-intermediate · about 4 1/4 in across · about 80 minutes per coaster · DK cotton in 2 colors. Twelve short rounds, all written out color by color.

This crochet snowflake coaster is a little hexagon with a cream snowflake on cranberry red. It is worked in the round in tapestry crochet: rows of single crochet where the color you are not using travels inside the stitches. The 6 increases of every round sit in the same 6 places, so the coaster grows as a hexagon, and the 6 arms of the snowflake run right along them.

Make a set of 4 or 6 for the holidays, or a single one as a gift tag on a wrapped mug. It is a free, original CookZya design, in US terms.

Every round was checked by our stitch simulator (12 of 12), and the written color sequences were read back into the chart. The coaster has not been crochet-tested yet. Tick each round as you go.

Materials

  • Color W — cream, about 15 yd
  • Color R — cranberry red, about 15 yd
  • Yardage is estimated from the stitch counts with a 20 % margin. Cotton is best for a coaster: it takes a hot mug and washes well.
  • Yarn needle; 1 stitch marker.

Notes

  • US crochet terms. ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, st(s) = stitch(es), rep = repeat, Rnd = round.
  • Single crochet (sc): insert the hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops.
  • Every round is joined with a sl st in the first sc and starts with ch 1 (does not count), in the same st as the join. You never turn: the right side always faces you.
  • "2 sc in next st" = 2 sc in the same stitch, in the color the round says (the repeat code shows it): this is the corner increase. There are 6 per round, one in each repeat, and they stack into the 6 corners of the hexagon.
  • Tapestry crochet: change color on the last yarn over of the stitch before the new color, and work over the color you are not using, so it travels inside the stitches. From Rnd 3 to Rnd 11, both colors are always carried; red is cut before Rnd 12.
  • *…; rep from * 5 more times means: work the part after the * 6 times in all — one for each side of the hexagon.
  • The corner increase always goes into one of the 2 sc of the increase below — the first one, then the second one on the next round — so its place in the repeat moves 1 st later every 2 rounds. The written rounds already do this; it keeps the 6 corners and the snowflake arms straight instead of twisting.
  • Joins: the sl st that closes a round and the ch 1 that opens the next are worked in the color of the first stitch of the next round. The join runs in the red just before arm 1.

How the snowflake coaster is built

The coaster drawn from the pattern, one dot per stitch — a computer drawing, not a photo: real single crochet makes small V shapes, and the hexagon edges are a little rounder.

Coaster

Use the E-4 hook. W = cream, R = cranberry red.

  1. With W (cream), make a magic ring. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 6 sc in the ring. Pull the tail to close the ring. Join with sl st in first sc (6 sc). 6 sc
  2. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 sc in each st around, starting in the same st as the join. Join with sl st in first sc (12 sc). 12 sc
  3. Join R (cranberry red): lay it along the top of Rnd 2 and work over it from now on. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), starting in the same st as the join: *with W, 2 sc in next st, changing to R in the 2nd sc; with R, sc in next st, changing to W in last st; rep from * 5 more times. On the last repeat, do not change color at the end: Rnd 4 starts with R. Join with sl st in first sc (18 sc). Each repeat reads WW R. 18 sc

Finishing

Weave in the ends on the back, inside stitches of the same color. Block the coaster flat: pin the 6 corners out, mist it with water and let it dry.

Design notes

  • A flat circle of single crochet grows by 6 stitches a round; with the 6 increases stacked in the same places, it grows as a hexagon instead.
  • The 2 sc of each corner increase are always cream from Rnd 3 to Rnd 10: that is the spine of each arm. Each increase is worked into the first or the second sc of the increase below, in turn, so each arm zigzags by half a stitch but does not drift.
  • Each arm has 2 V-shaped branches (Rnds 6-7 and 9-10), mirrored on both sides of the spine.

Tips for a crisp snowflake

  • Keep the carried yarn relaxed: tapestry crochet in the round cups if the carried strand is pulled tight.
  • Place a marker in the first stitch of each round: that is where you join.
  • Count the cream stitches of each repeat against the chart before you close the round.
  • Make the whole set before you weave in the ends: the tails are short work in one sitting.

Common mistakes

  • Working the increase anywhere other than into one of the 2 sc of the increase below: the corners drift and the arms bend.
  • Changing color in the stitch itself instead of on the last yarn over of the stitch before.
  • Pulling the carried yarn tight: the coaster cups.

Make it your own

  • Colors as written: a cream snowflake on cranberry red, cream edge.
  • Winter blue: a white snowflake on navy or denim blue.
  • Reverse: a red snowflake on cream.
  • Bigger: with worsted cotton and a US G-6 (4.0 mm) hook the same rounds make a mat about 5 1/4 in across the flats (estimated at 4.5 rounds per inch).

Care

  • Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag, or hand wash.
  • Dry flat; pin the corners out if they curl.

FAQ

Is this crochet snowflake coaster pattern good for beginners?

It suits a beginner who knows single crochet and wants to try color changes: the rounds are short and every one is written out color by color.

How big is the coaster?

About 4 1/4 in across the flat sides with DK cotton and a US E-4 hook — an estimate from a suggested gauge.

How much yarn does a set of 4 take?

About 60 yd of cream and 60 yd of red in DK cotton, estimated with a 20 % margin.

Why is it a hexagon?

Because the 6 increases of every round are stacked: a snowflake has 6 arms, and they run along the 6 corners.

Can I sell the coasters I make?
